Silk Velvet Ikat Pillows
Textile historian John Gillow describes the silk velvet ikat bakhmal as the region’s “most costly and exclusive weave of all.” They feature a range of motifs common to Central Asian textiles, such as the anor-gul (pomegranate) and lola-gul (tulip), and have been traditionally made with natural dyes, such as anor-post (pomegranate skin) for black and kyzyl-bakam (sandalwood) or royan (madder root) for red. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Uzbekistan has witnessed a revival of traditional crafts, including the production of bakhmal textiles.
