The Senegalese music giant Youssou N’Dour makes his way to the U.S. East Coast this coming week with performances in New York City and the Washington, DC area.
On Sunday, April 27, N’Dour will perform at the Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, New York. He will then travel down the Acela Corridor to the Music Center at Strathmore, located in North Bethesda, Maryland, for a sold-out evening show on Tuesday, April 29.
These shows come after N’Dour’s performance at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on Friday.
These are the only two shows N’Dour currently has planned for the United States in the coming months, making them rare opportunities for fans of world music and African pop to experience his legendary live performances.
N’Dour, often hailed as one of the most influential African musicians of all time, has made previous appearances at the Strathmore. His return there to a sold-out crowd underscores his enduring popularity among Washington-area audiences.
In 2005, N’Dour won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album in 2005 for Egypt, which honored Senegalese Sufi saints — including Amadou Bamba, founder of the Mouride Sufi order — and blended traditional Senegalese music with Egyptian instrumentation.
His most recent album, Mbalax, released in 2021, sees him returning to the signature Senegalese dance music style he helped globalize, blending traditional rhythms with modern instrumentation.
