The inspiration behind our name, Mogulesque, began with a fascination with the grandeur of the Mughal Empire, which ruled much of the subcontinent for four centuries, leaving behind architectural masterpieces like the Taj Mahal.
The empire’s legacy of craftsmanship and culture continues to resonate today, experiencing a revival both in its homeland and among the diaspora, while also captivating those from afar with no ancestral connection to the region.
Our name, as you may have figured out, is a play on “Mogul” — the English-language word derived from the Persian term for the Mughals.
While today “Mogul” often refers to titans of industry, we embrace the word in two ways.
First, in the evolution of its meaning — how one group of people can be inspired by another and make something anew. A theme that unites our stories is the migration and transformation of people, ideas, words, flavors, and forms. Creativity knows no borders.
Second, the possibility of grandeur in us all. In this democratic era, we all can be moguls. We can all eat dishes once prepared for kings, visit gardens once off limits to commoners, and wear garments designed long ago for royals.
Mogulesque is a cross-cultural, digital experience where the past meets the present, and East meets West. As an online magazine and retailer, we celebrate the aesthetics, cultures, ideas, tastes, and sounds of the East in their classical, modern, and cosmopolitan forms.
We are driven by the belief that beauty has been commanded in all things, and it is the pursuit of that beauty that guides our writers and curates our selections.
We’re pleased to have you on this journey as we explore the architecture, art, fashion, food, history, literature, and music of our beautiful world.
